Norfolk Scouts and Norfolk Amateur Radio Club joined forces this year to set up and run JOTA station.
Norfolk Scouts JOTA Station, GB60NFK – 21 / 22 October 2017
“I didn’t really know what I was sending my son on but he had an amazing time, what opportunities they get in Scouting and to think all Scouts taking part all over the world got the same badge, that is amazing!” – Claire, a parent
This event was open to all Scouts across the county to attend, take part in JOTA and learn a little about Radio Operations, and ultimately to make contact with our Scouting friends in the UK and further afield. This station ran from 10am Saturday until 1.30pm Sunday and attracted around 50 Scouts over the course of the weekend.
On offer to the Scouts was a Morse ‘taster’ session which also the Scouts some background on radios and how they operate, a High Frequency (HF -Long distance), D-Star (Digital), DMR(Digital) and 2M/70 cms (VHF/UHF)
Whilst weather and propagation conditions were far from ideal, HF contact were made up to the north of the UK and near continent but Digital modes worked well with contacts into North America, Canada, Qatar and the Middle East.
Feedback from the Scouts and Leaders who attended has been very positive with comments made on how professional the amateur operators were!
Many thanks to all of the Leader who brought Scout and especially to the Amateur Radio Operators without whom we could not have run the event – Namely: Stuart M0JKB, Zena M6ZLA, Paul G1DXQ, Julian 2E0DJR, Nick 2E0NHJ, David G7URP, Jim G3YLA, Kevin M0UJD
