Chairman’s Challenge

A seasonal message from the Chairman of Norfolk County Council to all Adult Volunteers.

The Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Cllr John Ward would like to share the following message to all Adults Volunteers providing a reminder that he would like to visit sections and about the opportunity to gain his Chairman’s Challenge badge.

If you would like more details about the challenge or arrange for the Chairman to visit your section please contact Matt Kitchin, ACC Events.

Dear Volunteers

I hope you are well and all the young people are enjoying the activities, skills, friendship and adventure that your organisation provides.

It was an honour to have met with many of you at my theme launch event in September, I had some great feedback from my guests, including my fellow senior county civics the Lord Lieutenant’s Deputy and High Sheriff, whom all had an enjoyable evening meeting the young people and trying out some new skills and activities.  I think we found all the bottle rockets!!

With the Christmas season upon us, I thought I would contact you to see if you are doing anything with my ‘Chairman’s Challenge’ in mind.  This time of year can be very lonely and isolating for many people, whether elderly or not, disabled or simply isolated and lonely.  I hope you may use this time of year to reach out into your communities and fulfil the Challenge.

I am already attended activities by groups taking part in my Challenge and would be delighted to attend any others being organised in the New Year.

During my first few of months of my term in office I have already visited and met some amazing young people and adults from a wide range of organisations, I am very keen to visit more of your individual groups and units.

Here is just as a quick reminder of the details of my challenge:

Chairman’s Challenge

The ‘Chairman’s Challenge’ for any youth organisation in Norfolk to take part in an activity to engage with lonely, isolated or vulnerable people in their local communities.

It can be in any format (it is flexible depending on the needs of each organisation), as a single activity/event or over a period of time, as a group/unit/squadron/detachment or as individuals.

A badge or certificate will be awarded for this.

The Scouts and Guides County Commissioners have given permission for their young people to wear a badge on their uniform, but for Cadets or other organisations it may be more suitable for them to receive a certificate of achievement.

Document the activity, photos would be appreciated so they can be included on the Council Chairman web page, and email to or post to Chairman’s Office, Dem Services Ground Floor South Wing, County Hall, Martineau Lane, Norwich NR1 2DH by the deadline 31 March 2018.  Please include the names and organisations of the recipients who have completed the Challenge.

My Challenge will culminate with a reception on 27 April 2018 when I will be inviting representatives from the youth organisations to receive their badges or certificates for their young people and to recognised any particularly exceptional activities.

I would appreciate knowing by the end of February how many Badges or Certificates you think you will require for your young people taking part so they can be ordered and ready for the April reception.

I look forward to hearing from you and your organisation and look forward to meeting more of you all soon.

With kind regards and season’s greetings

Cllr John Ward
