Nature has a habit of nudging us back to life in spring. The days stretch out, the air sharpens, and something in us stirs. It turns out that Norfolk’s young people need exactly that same energy right now, because our Scout volunteer teams are ready to deliver exciting outdoor programmes and they could do with a few more pairs of hands.
Each week, Scout volunteers help young people aged 4 to 18 gain skills for life through activities and adventures.
From campfire cooking, to navigation challenges and outdoor games in the countryside, spring and summer open up a world of possibility for young people. But the quality and ambition of those programmes depends directly on the number of adults willing to invest their time.
More volunteers means a lighter load shared across the team, which in turn means more young people can take part and fewer have to sit on waiting lists.
Whether you want to work directly with young people or help out behind the scenes, there is something for everyone at Scouts.
You do not need a badge in bushcraft or a history of working with children. No previous experience with young people is required, and whether you would like to help week after week or whenever you can, learning opportunities and support are provided every step of the way.
Depending on your skills and interests, you might find yourself working directly with young people in a section team, leading others in a leadership team, or supporting volunteers and programmes in other ways.
There are roles that suit people who love the outdoors, and equally valuable roles for those who prefer planning, admin or governance. No matter your background or experience, your time and skills can help young people find their place in the world, learn to believe in themselves and make a difference to their communities.
Volunteering does something for you too. It is a proven boost for mental wellbeing, confidence and sense of purpose, and you might even discover hidden talents or find a whole new direction in life.
So as the bulbs push through and the evenings grow longer, consider this your sign. Norfolk’s Scout groups are setting off on their spring and summer programmes, and your involvement could make the difference between a good season and a brilliant one.
